Basic recipe Swedish pickled herring – Inlagd sill
Pickled herring can be prepared several days before it is eaten and is best eaten within a week of preparing. Recipes vary from family to family of course but here are the basics. With this recipe you add just a few ingredients to make your inland sill creamy, intense horseradish, curry or mustard!
Ingredients you need:
6 fresh herring fillets
1 red onion, sliced
1 teaspoon whole spice pepper
1/2 carrot, grated
1 dl white vinegar
2 dl sugar
3 dl water
4 bay leaves
1 tablespoon of cloves, whole
Bring the pickling solution ingredients to a boil then take off the heat.
Allow the pickling solution to cool and then place in the fridge, preferably overnight.
Soak the herring over night in water.
Slice the herring into pieces, put the pieces the pickling solution and let the herring sit in the solution. At least a day in the fridge gives the best flavor.
Garnish on dark break or wheat crackers with carrot, red onion, sour cream and spices.
